Annual General Meeting followed by a lecture by Will Vaughan “Drawing the Line”
January 16, 2025 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
“There are no lines in nature, only areas of colour, one against another”. MANET
The French painter Manet may well be right. The line may well be no more than a human construct, something we impose on the natural world as we perceive it and try to describe it. Yet however artificial, it has been one of the key elements that have enabled us to explore and measure the world – and indeed the Universe. It appears first in the earliest cave art, more than seventy thousand years ago, and has been a basic tool for artists ever since. In this talk, Will will explore how it has been used and thought about by artists through history, as well as considering ways in which some artists in recent time have sought to circumvent it.
