Lynn Baxter has extended her arts practice by writing a novel with a distinctly artistic and literary dimension.
A work of literary fiction, Crimson Joy takes its title from the William Blake poem from Songs of Innocence and Experience, part of his famed hand-printed and illustrated works. Shades of William Blake are embedded in the storyline, not least because the main protagonist’s adoptive father is the Blake-obsessed owner of the bookshops, The Sick Rose and The Invisible Worm.
A beguiling human comedy in the form of a quest, the main characters, Mae and Damian, meet again after a ten-year rift only to find that their personal growth is sabotaged as much by their own behaviour as it is through the machinations of others.

‘The fact that Baxter is a renowned painter and sculptor is apparent not only in the book’s many visual treats, but also
in the fact that Crimson Joy is an extremely well-crafted novel,
written with moral attention, compassion and great care.’
Frances Liardet, winner of the Betty Trask Award and author of The Game, We Must Be Brave, and Think of Me.

This book is intended to inspire the reader to take a trip in the countryside and see it through the eyes of an artist.
It is my response to continually travelling to Sandford Orcas along the same stretch of road for nigh-on forty years.
It is about my observations, the people I meet and the wealth of wildlife which abounds there.
This book is illustrated with 60 colour works and pages of drawings which take you on my personal journey. Most of the work was done on location
Ultimately it is about me indulging myself and thoroughly enjoying it.
