Wire & Mixed media Sculpture Workshop

A “real life” workshop was held on the 20th and 21st of May, at Hadspen Village Hall with Melanie Deegan – a well known sculptor based in the West Country.

Sculptures from the workshop

Members prepared drawings and reference images beforehand and then, using varied sorts of wire, aluminium wire mesh, silicon moulds and other incredibly named and versatile materials such as “Pavapol”, ( a kind of fast drying white glue which can be mixed with pigment inks to give colour to a piece ) “Crystacal”, ( an alpha grade plaster ) and “Scrim”, ( a sort of cotton bandage, well known to textile artists ) to name a few, created some very beautiful, and in some cases quite “quirky” pieces of sculpture. This was after just two days!

Melanie brought many interesting and exciting materials to use during the workshop as well as some enchanting examples of her own work.
Her calm guidance, encouragement and expertise was very much appreciated throughout and she attended to everyone’s needs without fuss or flurry.

Jackie Curtis Workshop

 Monoprinting & Ghost Plates       7 – 8 November

Printmaker Jackie Curtis gave 12 of our members a really informative & enjoyable couple of days at Hadspen Hall with lots of demos & guidance. She also worked tirelessly turning the press!

It was amazing to see how feathers, leaves, fabrics, leather, string & all sorts of other unlikely stuff can produce such beautiful monoprints. Many such prints were produced by the group; some really stunning.

It was a really worthwhile couple of days and we may well see some of the results from this workshop in our next exhibition!

Patrick Cullen Workshop

Plein air pastel painting with Patrick Cullen                     19 – 20 September

For anyone who booked a place on this workshop in January, it was an act of faith in the September weather….. but it turned out hot and sunny on both days – vivid blue skies and bright colours. The orchard next to Hadspen Village Hall was laden with ripening rosy apples – a wonderful place to paint.

Patrick has run three workshops for Bruton Art Society now and was extremely diligent in finding us all in the orchard to give guidance and help on the use of pastels. Some of us were complete beginners with this medium and it was a privilege to learn from him.

On both afternoons he took a little time to paint alongside us & it was invaluable to watch him work.

Gary Cook Workshop

Plein Air Watercolour Painting with Gary Cook SGFA
16 – 17 May

Day 1   It was apple blossom time in the orchard outside Hadspen village hall, and  after a slide show tutorial the group spent the day outdoors painting under Gary’s guidance.
Day 2  was wet so Gary set large colour prints on the walls and used demonstrations to guide the group with many tips from colour choice to using salt crystals.
He was a sensitive and thoughtful tutor showing the group exactly how to capture the light, as promised.  The final show of work was very impressive.

ANTHONY CONNOLLY WORKSHOP Thurs and Fri 20th-21st September

Ten of us gathered at Hadspen Village Hall where we had two days under the excellent guidance of Anthony Connolly drawing and painting portraits of two wonderful models who turned out to be brother and sister.  Having the opportunity to do sustained work under such a teacher with such models really is a pleasure and a great opportunity and for me personally, an inspiration.
